Another week, another new release!

This one’s exciting as fuck, too!

Hudson Mohawke, producer-kid from Glasgow, has put out several singles and E.P.’s over the last few years after a couple of his beat-tapes circulated around the frackin’ world (Hudson’s Heeters). To say his debut is highly anticipated by many is an understatement. Out on Warp Records tomorrow, Butter is a smattering of tweaked-out snares and futuristic funknsoul.

I’ve played “Rising 5” for a bunch of people and the response has been pretty much the same: “Wow. I’ve never heard anything like that.” He does some amazing stuff with his drum sounds, for starters. His snares (and the bass drum) on this tune are something else. I love the lead synth part during the verse (dunno what to call it), a bit delayed and off-beat as the keys move down the board.

He has a lot of unique sounds in the mix, at least compared to other artists in the glitched/future funk/hip-hop instrumental album. But he uses all of his sounds throughout the whole thing. And it’s good.

HudMo does some cool stuff with sampled voices loaded into keyboard-like arrangements like on “Fruit Touch” and “3:30.” On the four tracks with lead vocals, purveyors of this new sound show up to add some spice to the instrumentals. Olivier Daysoul is a straight party-starter on “Joy Fantastic” while Dam-Funk (featured on G’s Albums before) brings a laid back, understated approach.

I’m sure HudMo is already an in-demand producer, though he hasn’t done much for other artists. I bet that’s going to change and I bet he gets called on and delivers for some more well-known artists in the future. His sound is so fresh and new and he could really shake things up the more mainstream hip-hop circles. I mean, doesn’t Butter make everything taste better?
