Artist: Dorian Concept
Album: When Planets Explode (2009)
Track: “Fort Teen”
Yo yo! Album 17 for my Best of 2009 collection.
I don’t know if it’s just me or it’s a real thing, but this year seemed to be the year of glitchy hip-hop instrumental LP (some of which I’ve already featured here and some still to come). A bona-fide leader of that pack is Austria’s Dorian Concept. When Planets Explode got the year started off right, released in February, and it’s still as fresh to listen to. The album is aptly titled: wicked basslines and far-out keys. Tons of sonic explosions. For example, when I hear the violent electronic funkiness of “The Fucking Formula,” my shoulders tense up and I do that “oh my this is so nasty that I can’t help but to grimace” face.
When music can make you involuntarily contort and you love every minute of it, you know it’s good.
